"I'll start praying when I feel more stable." "I'll read Quran when exams are over." "I'll change when I'm older." Sound familiar?

We have a habit of negotiating with our own deen. We put conditions on our obedience as if Allah gave us a deadline extension we somehow missed.

Here's the truth nobody wants to say out loud: you are never going to feel ready. Ready is a feeling. And feelings lie.

"Take advantage of five before five: your youth before your old age, your health before your sickness, your wealth before your poverty, your free time before your preoccupation, and your life before your death."

Shu'ab al-Iman — al-Bayhaqi

The Prophet ﷺ didn't say "wait until things calm down." He said take advantage. That's an action word.

The trap of "not yet"

Procrastination is not a productivity problem. It's a spiritual one. Every time you say "not yet" to something good, the shaytaan wins that round.

Think about it when do you ever say "not yet" to scrolling? To sleeping in? To skipping the gym? Never. We only put off the things that actually matter.

Your nafs is comfortable. Growth is uncomfortable. That friction you feel before starting something good? That's actually proof you're on the right track.

What youth really means in Islam

One of the seven people who will be under Allah's shade on the Day of Judgement is a young person who grew up in the worship of Allah. Young. Not old. Not retired. Young.

Your 20s, your student years, your "figuring it out" phase these are not waiting rooms. They are the main event. The deeds you plant now will grow for decades.

"The feet of the son of Adam shall not move from before his Lord on the Day of Judgement, until he is asked about five things: his life and how he spent it, his youth and how he used it..."

Jami' al-Tirmidhi

You will be asked about your youth specifically. Not just your life — your youth. That question is coming. What will your answer be?

How to actually start

  • Pick one thing. Not ten. One. The smallest possible version of it.

  • Do it today, not Monday. Monday is a myth your nafs invented.

  • Tell Allah your intention first. Say it out loud in dua before you begin.

  • Accept imperfection. A bad prayer is better than no prayer. A shaky start is better than no start.

The door of tawbah is open. The door of opportunity is open. The only door that's closing is the one marked "later."

This Sunday's challenge

Identify the ONE thing you've been putting off for your deen. Start it today before 3PM. Even if it's just 5 minutes. Text a friend to keep you accountable.

May Allah give us the tawfiq to begin, and the sabr to continue. Ameen.

With love and dua,
Afshan
